When on Saturday she decided to also sit out the individual finals for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/olympics\/2021\/07\/30\/simone-biles-vault-uneven-bars-tokyo-olympics\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_3\">vault and uneven bars<\/a>, she had some people questioning her entire competitive future.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"remainder-content\" data-gtm-vis-recent-on-screen-11017726_601=\"90710\" data-gtm-vis-first-on-screen-11017726_601=\"90710\" data-gtm-vis-total-visible-time-11017726_601=\"100\" data-gtm-vis-has-fired-11017726_601=\"1\">\n<section>\n<div>\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \" data-el=\"text\">As a three-time Olympian and the first African American to win an Olympic gold medal in gymnastics, I\u2019m one of the few people who can empathize with what Biles is going through \u2014 this feeling of having the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/simone-biles-weight-world-pressure-tokyo-olympics-team-gymnastics-exit-1613545\">weight of the world<\/a>\u201d on her shoulders.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \" data-el=\"text\">And to those who suggest this could be the end for Biles, I say this: In fact, it might just be the beginning.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"cb dn db-ns\" data-qa=\"article-body-ad\">\n<div class=\"hide-for-print relative flex justify-center content-box items-center b bh mb-md mt-none pt-lg pb-lg\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n<div class=\"center absolute w-100\" data-sc-v=\"4.38.1-subs.4\" data-sc-c=\"adslot\">\n<div class=\"dib bg-white pl-xs pr-xs font-sans-serif light font-xxxxs lh-md gray-dark\" data-sc-v=\"4.38.1-subs.4\" data-sc-c=\"adslot\">I know a thing or two about having to start over.<\/div>\n<div data-sc-v=\"4.38.1-subs.4\" data-sc-c=\"adslot\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \" data-el=\"text\">I have lived and breathed gymnastics since I was 6 years old. I was a member of the U.S. national team <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamusa.org\/News\/2016\/March\/24\/Making-History-Was-Secondary-To-Success-For-Gymnastics-Pioneer-Dominique-Dawes\">for a decade<\/a>. Through it all, I was exposed to the toxic culture of a sport that turned a blind eye to the verbal, physical, emotional and sexual abuse of its gymnasts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \" data-el=\"text\">In 1992, when I was 15 years old, I competed in my first Olympics, in Barcelona, where our team took the bronze. In Atlanta, in 1996 \u2014 where our team won gold \u2014 I had an emotional and mental breakdown. Before marching out into the Georgia Dome for the team competition, in front of thousands of screaming fans and with billions of people watching, I dropped to my knees and prayed, overwhelmed by the moment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \" data-el=\"text\">A teammate said, \u201cDominique, you\u2019ve done this before, come on, we can\u2019t do this without you!\u201d Somehow, I pulled it together. But that experience haunted me for years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"cb dn db-ns\" data-qa=\"article-body-ad\">\n<div class=\"hide-for-print relative flex justify-center content-box items-center b bh mb-md mt-none pt-lg pb-lg\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n<div class=\"center absolute w-100\" data-sc-v=\"4.38.1-subs.4\" data-sc-c=\"adslot\">\n<div class=\"dib bg-white pl-xs pr-xs font-sans-serif light font-xxxxs lh-md gray-dark\" data-sc-v=\"4.38.1-subs.4\" data-sc-c=\"adslot\">Looking back, it\u2019s easy to see why.<\/div>\n<div data-sc-v=\"4.38.1-subs.4\" data-sc-c=\"adslot\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \" data-el=\"text\">U.S. gymnastics\u2019 appalling culture has been felt at every level of the sport. Many coaches rule through intimidation and fear \u2014 and have been rewarded for it. They scream at practices that begin before sunrise and end after sunset. They bestow only scant praise, indulging instead in streams of criticism and looks of disgust.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \" data-el=\"text\">I remember walking on eggshells, feeling as if I were always letting someone down. My bowed legs were a deduction. My flat feet were a deduction. I started feeling as if I myself were a deduction.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \" data-el=\"text\">Young gymnasts push through agony and sickness out of fear and compete in emotional and physical pain. We may smile for the cameras and offer politically correct sound bites, but this hides the fact that for many of us, true happiness and freedom are rarely felt.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"cb dn db-ns\" data-qa=\"article-body-ad\">\n<div class=\"hide-for-print relative flex justify-center content-box items-center b bh mb-md mt-none pt-lg pb-lg\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n<div class=\"center absolute w-100\" data-sc-v=\"4.38.1-subs.4\" data-sc-c=\"adslot\">\n<div class=\"dib bg-white pl-xs pr-xs font-sans-serif light font-xxxxs lh-md gray-dark\" data-sc-v=\"4.38.1-subs.4\" data-sc-c=\"adslot\">That\u2019s one reason <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/fbi-nassar-investigation-failures\/2021\/07\/14\/ebc37274-e4c4-11eb-8aa5-5662858b696e_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Larry Nassar<\/a>, the former USA Gymnastics team doctor \u2014 who for decades subjected girls and young women to serial abuse \u2014 was able to get away with his crimes for so long.<\/div>\n<div data-sc-v=\"4.38.1-subs.4\" data-sc-c=\"adslot\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \" data-el=\"text\">In a sport often devoid of kindness, Nassar presented himself as the \u201cnice guy,\u201d someone we gymnasts could talk to about anything. Of course, as the world now knows, Nassar didn\u2019t care about the girls and women he treated. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/olympics\/usa-gymnastics-allowed-larry-nassar-to-prey-upon-innocent-victims-congress-must-investigate\/2018\/01\/24\/0ff7a7c4-0129-11e8-8acf-ad2991367d9d_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">He was a pedophile<\/a>, subjecting his victims to lasting psychological trauma, even as many were attempting to reveal other traumas to him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \" data-el=\"text\">I don\u2019t have any recollection of being sexually abused by this monster. But his welcoming demeanor, especially at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, haunts me to this day.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \" data-el=\"text\">At the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials in Boston, I had pulled myself out after the preliminary competition. It had nothing to do with my performance; I could feel that the selection team didn\u2019t want me there. My coach talked me into finishing, though I know now that I didn\u2019t want to \u2014 I felt forced. But like a robot, I\u2019d been programmed into doing what I was told, no matter what.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"cb dn db-ns\" data-qa=\"article-body-ad\">\n<div class=\"hide-for-print relative flex justify-center content-box items-center b bh mb-md mt-none pt-lg pb-lg\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n<div class=\"center absolute w-100\" data-sc-v=\"4.38.1-subs.4\" data-sc-c=\"adslot\">\n<div class=\"dib bg-white pl-xs pr-xs font-sans-serif light font-xxxxs lh-md gray-dark\" data-sc-v=\"4.38.1-subs.4\" data-sc-c=\"adslot\">In Sydney, Nassar saw how miserable I was. He let me know that if I needed anything, he was there. Thankfully, I never stepped into his web. Over the years I\u2019d built up a wall of self-protection. Instead, I counted down the days to freedom. My comeback in 2000 was truly for the fans \u2014 the people who\u2019ve saved me more than they\u2019ll ever know.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \" data-el=\"text\">What Biles has underscored for us all is that mental health is worth more than a gold medal \u2014 more than any title. Biles is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/storytelling\/graphic-novels\/simone-biles-skills\/1626732120436\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">greatest gymnast of all time<\/a>, but she\u2019s so much more than that. She\u2019s a mental health advocate, a survivor, an inspiration to millions. And she\u2019s only 24. An Olympic exit will not be the end of her story.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \" data-el=\"text\">As for my new beginnings: I\u2019m a wife and mother of four young kids, and I recently opened the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dominiquedawesgymnasticsacademy.com\/\">Dominique Dawes Gymnastics &amp; Ninja Academy<\/a>.
