Here, they get candid about how the culture around marijuana is changing in the NBA, everything it took to get here, and more.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_gh2ztvml9\"><strong>Al Harrington<\/strong><br \/>\nMan, I remember the first time that I smoked &#8230; it was <em>crazy<\/em>. I was with Stephen Jackson, Matt, and Baron, and they gave me something that was so strong that my paranoia went through <em>the roof<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_p5uh8ev4j\">I went and sat in my room, and I thought I was hearing sirens and all <em>kinda<\/em> stuff. I\u2019ll never forget. I was thinking like, <em>Why would they smoke if this is how it makes them feel?<\/em> Hahah.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_nb2t6isi9\">So I\u2019m gonna ask you: The first time you ever smoked, what was that experience like for you?<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_c7nap1wcn\"><strong>Allen Iverson<\/strong><br \/>\nThe first time, I didn\u2019t have a really bad experience. I was just sittin\u2019 in the house. I had a problem because I <em>thought<\/em> I was smoking it, and I was really smoking hash, but I didn\u2019t know. He talking about my basketball skills and this, that and the third. And I\u2019m just smoking with him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_4m6z9zyli\">I just remember going to the bathroom man \u2026 remember that Janet Jackson shirt? That had Janet Jackson\u2019s face on it, and it had the man\u2026? It was from the cover of a magazine.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"_gbhpnbv viewablity-block\" data-mm-id=\"display-1\">\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_04ybjc7gl\"><strong>Harrington\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nHolding the boobs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_j5pcowa3x\"><strong>A.I.<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Right<\/em>. Well I had on that shirt. It was going off the cover of that magazine, but I\u2019m looking in the mirror and I\u2019m <em>trippin\u2019<\/em>. I\u2019m wiping the shirt off and everything. I\u2019m thinking like that\u2019s supposed to be her, but it\u2019s this alien cartoon character.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_4rvz4r04j\">So, I turn around and I walk back to the studio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_8baga5742\">I end up right at the desk where you walk in, and I ask the lady where the studio is. She tells me to go back, go down there, and take a left and whatever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_0n04ncr6f\">I went down, opened the door \u2026 and all of a sudden, I\u2019m back in the bathroom <em>again<\/em>. I do this like two or three times, and the last time I was like, <em>Yo. I know she gon\u2019 think I\u2019m trippin\u2019 if I ask her again<\/em>. \u2019Cause every time I go back and end up in the bathroom!<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_ztp6xwnc2\">And man, a lady was walking by, and as I was walking by her I was just <em>stomping \u2019<\/em>cause I couldn\u2019t feel my feet. And she was like, \u201cUh, A.I., you alright?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_bqnfqe8k3\">And I was like, \u201cYeah, I\u2019m cool. Can you show me where the studio at?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_1ue1kifve\">And she directed me to the joint. So I went in there, and Big or Cease, one of \u2019em was like, \u201cYou smoking again?\u201d And I was like yeah. And he was like, \u201cWhat you want, the hash or the chronic?\u201d And I was like, \u201c<em>HASH??<\/em>\u201d You know what I mean! And they was like \u201cYeah, that\u2019s what you were smoking last time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_ujy3q9unj\">And I\u2019m like, <em>Oh my God<\/em>. You know what I\u2019m saying? Like, <em>That\u2019s why I\u2019m trippin.<\/em> And I had to be at the Rucker the next day! Man, I told my homeboys like, <em>Yo man, we outta here. I gotta get outta here.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_nwmkp9hgs\">I went back to my hotel room \u2014 room was spinning or whatever. Because they live by a different set of rules than we do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_p4vc3krw2\">But I actually thought &#8230; didn\u2019t I read something that said you met John Thompson for the first time when you were high??<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_7y93t0nz5\"><strong>A.I.\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nBro. No! I wasn\u2019t high then. It was like the first time I had come on campus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_spemm3xlp\">I remember going to this girl who\u2019s my homegirl now \u2014 like I rock with her hard, like all this many years later she\u2019s still my homegirl. And I went to her house and I was smoking over at her crib.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_v4uflqzx6\"><em>Man<\/em>, somebody knocked on the door and said, \u201cCoach up the hill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_3z6jwiumx\">So I ran out the joint. I\u2019m thinking in my mind, <em>This man done gave me an opportunity\u2026. <\/em>You know what I mean? I <em>just<\/em> came here, and I\u2019m getting ready to get sent back <em>already<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_ohp9p1ccu\">I went and washed up or whatever, and I remember going to the car, and Coach is like, \u201cCome here, boy.\u201d And I walked close to the car, but I didn\u2019t walk all the way up, because I didn\u2019t want him to know that I was high. But he just said he came up there to check on me, make sure I was alright, and that was all he wanted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_l3xpukv4k\">I mean, in my mind I was like, <em>I blew it<\/em>, though. I was paranoid, I\u2019m talking about <em>terrible<\/em>. Couldn\u2019t go to sleep. \u2019Cause I just thought I had thrown it all away, just like<em> that<\/em>, you know what I mean? For him to do what he did for me, and then the first day I come there, I\u2019m getting ready to get sent back home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_yeqqny8cq\"><strong>Harrington\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nWhen I think about the fact that you are an icon, and everything that you did to transcend the game &#8230; you know, you gave everybody the <em>courage<\/em> to be who they are. And when I think about what we\u2019re doing in cannabis, it\u2019s the same thing. We\u2019re like stepping out there, for the people that are a little afraid, and giving them a glimpse of what it would look like if they did it, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_reidqhq3z\">So, when you were actually living that in the moment, did you really fully understand everything that you were doing at that time?<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_38yl6vm58\"><strong>A.I.\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nI understood it, but only because of the backlash from it, you know what I mean?<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_yec44yhno\">And I was so aware of it because, you know, I heard, in the beginning, all the talk about my \u201cposse\u201d and the way we dressed &#8230; my hair, tattoos and all that. They were basically like saying, \u201cThis guy is a thug.\u201d But I was just being myself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_jnb368z6k\">I was being the guy I was in college, and growing up. You know what I mean? And it\u2019s like you on the <em>biggest<\/em> platform in the world, as far as the NBA, and now you wanna get to this point and turn into somebody else. You wanna change and try to be somebody else. But who are you doing it for? I always felt like, <em>What\u2019s wrong with being me?<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_bad1100rj\">If I\u2019m not doing anything wrong, and I\u2019m not harming nobody, getting in nobody else\u2019s way, what difference do it make how I wear my hair? You know what I mean?<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_qig2jnjek\">You not gon\u2019 choose what\u2019s gonna be in somebody else\u2019s closet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_s73hnl1xd\">I took an <em>ass whuppin\u2019<\/em> for that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_3tt5bs0tf\">And it was worth every bit of it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_ej88cxxqu\">I had to deal with being on the cover of magazines, and they wanted me on the cover because of my talent and being the face of the NBA, but they\u2019d airbrush my tattoos off. So, you want <em>some <\/em>of me. But you don\u2019t want all of me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_6e7qkpblh\">So, I wanted to be that guy that people could look at and say, \u201cAye man, it\u2019s alright,\u201d and let the world get comfortable with us being who we are, as opposed to letting somebody change us because we\u2019re on a certain stage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_14tzxmd-o_O-style_1bq7hw7-o_O-style_6s3kpz-o_O-style_1nz8455\" data-mm-id=\"_4sfaipdyd\">If we were breaking laws or hurting people, that\u2019s totally different. But the guys that came in and started to dress like me, and had no problem letting the world recognize that, <em>I\u2019m like this<\/em>. Like somebody that you look up to. A trailblazer. Somebody that would take them chances. Somebody that was comfortable in their own skin.
