{"id":19545,"date":"2021-06-08T18:34:02","date_gmt":"2021-06-08T18:34:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theoklahomaeagle.net\/?p=19545"},"modified":"2021-06-08T18:34:02","modified_gmt":"2021-06-08T18:34:02","slug":"tulsa-school-board-member-publicly-opposes-414-million-bond-proposal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.willoughbyavenue.com\/eagle\/2021\/06\/08\/tulsa-school-board-member-publicly-opposes-414-million-bond-proposal\/","title":{"rendered":"Tulsa School Board Member Publicly Opposes $414 million Bond Proposal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ktul.com\/news\/local\/tulsa-school-board-member-publicly-opposes-414-million-bond-proposal\">www.ktul.com<\/a><br \/>\nBy Cory Smith<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nA\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tulsaschools.org\/about\/board-of-education\">Tulsa Public Schools board member<\/a>\u00a0took the unusual step of voicing her stance on the district\u2019s $414 million bond proposal.<br \/>\nJennettie Marshall came out in opposition Monday night \u2013 on the eve of the public\u2019s vote.<br \/>\nBoard members are not supposed to voice a stance, and NewsChannel 8\u2019s Burt Mummolo asked Marshall if she worried about getting in trouble for her public opposition.<br \/>\n\u201cGood trouble. Good trouble,\u201d she responded. \u201cWe have to speak truth to power.\u201d<br \/>\nMarshall cited concerns with transparency, conflicts of interest, and spending accountability.<br \/>\nThe Republican Party of Tulsa County is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ktul.com\/news\/local\/tulsa-republican-party-says-vote-no-on-tps-school-bond-package\">also urging people to vote no<\/a>\u00a0on the bond package.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s one thing to have members of the public voice their opposition to a school bond.<br \/>\n&#8220;I think there\u2019s no accountability,&#8221; said Marsha Francine Campbell.<br \/>\n&#8220;Transparency,&#8221; Diana West.<br \/>\n&#8220;I don&#8217;t trust them,&#8221; said Paul Zelenski.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s quite another to have that opposition joined by a school board member.<br \/>\n&#8220;As an individual, I cannot support the bond and I will not be supporting it,&#8221; said Jennettie Marshall, her reasons against echo many of the concerns voiced by demonstrators; transparency, accountability, conflicts of interest.<br \/>\n&#8220;I do not believe that it\u2019s in the best interest right now at this time until our community begins to get the answers to their questions,&#8221; she said.<br \/>\nBut also out there&#8230;<br \/>\n&#8220;I\u2019m feeling very confident that we will see a yes vote,&#8221; said Josh Roby, Chairperson of Citizens Bond Development Committee, who says he can see how bond money is being spent.<br \/>\n&#8220;I see the construction, I see the materials, I see the technology, I see the busses. I see firsthand where the dollars are spent in a way my kids interact with the school every single day,&#8221; he said.<br \/>\nBut for Marshall&#8230;<br \/>\n&#8220;I cannot support the bond in good conscience,&#8221; she said.<br \/>\nTomorrow will mark a new, albeit divergent milestone, in her long history with education.<br \/>\n&#8220;This is the first time in my voting life, and I\u2019m not a baby, that I have ever voted against a bond,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>www.ktul.com By Cory Smith &nbsp; A\u00a0Tulsa Public Schools board member\u00a0took the unusual step of voicing her stance on the district\u2019s $414 million bond proposal.
