Former City Treasurer <strong>Tishaura Jones<\/strong> won the election Tuesday against Alderwoman <strong>Cara Spencer<\/strong>.<br \/>\nJones, 49, will be sworn in on April 20.\u00a0She will be city\u2019s third Black mayor, winning 52% of the vote over her opponent\u2019s 48%.<br \/>\n\u201cSt. Louis: This is an opportunity for us to rise,\u201d Jones said in her victory speech Tuesday night. \u201cI told you when I was running that we aren\u2019t done avoiding tough conversations. We are done ignoring the racism that has held our city and our region back.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<div id=\"dsk-box-ad-c\" data-google-query-id=\"CJeoioj87O8CFfnN4wcd0GkJdA\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/134702932\/0154-thegrio.com_4__container__\">Jones has been critical of the city\u2019s \u201carrest and incarcerate\u201d model, even amid a rise in violent crime. Further, the population of the city continues to wane as people flee to the outer suburbs.<\/div>\n<div class=\"tpd-logo-container\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Jones has been city treasurer since 2013, serving as a state representative for five years before that.
