{"id":19177,"date":"2021-03-16T21:06:01","date_gmt":"2021-03-16T21:06:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theoklahomaeagle.net\/?p=19177"},"modified":"2021-03-16T21:06:01","modified_gmt":"2021-03-16T21:06:01","slug":"moderna-begins-testing-covid-19-vaccine-on-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.willoughbyavenue.com\/eagle\/2021\/03\/16\/moderna-begins-testing-covid-19-vaccine-on-children\/","title":{"rendered":"Moderna Begins Testing COVID-19 Vaccine On Children"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/03\/16\/moderna-begins-testing-covid-19-vaccine-on-children\/\">www.nypost.com<\/a><br \/>\nBy <a class=\"amanda-simon\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/author\/amanda-simon\/\">Amanda Simon<\/a><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-header\">\n<div class=\"entry-content entry-content-read-more\">\nModerna has given the first doses of its COVID-19 vaccine to children under the age of 12 \u2014 including babies as young as 6 months, the pharmaceutical company announced Tuesday.<br \/>\nThe study is slated to enroll 6,750 healthy kids in the US and Canada and is the latest effort to include children in the global vaccination campaign.<br \/>\nMost of the US COVID-19 vaccination effort so far <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/09\/01\/the-numbers-are-clear-covid-is-no-real-threat-to-kids\/\">has focused on inoculating adults<\/a>, who are at a higher risk of developing severe disease or dying from the virus.<br \/>\nAmong the three COVID-19 vaccines currently approved for use nationwide, Moderna\u2019s and Johnson &amp; Johnson\u2019s jabs are only authorized <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/12\/04\/moderna-says-its-vaccine-provides-covid-19-immunity-for-at-least-three-months\/\">for use in adults 18 and older<\/a>, while Pfizer\u2019s shot can be administered to people 16 and older.<br \/>\nThe US has <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/03\/14\/us-hits-world-record-in-daily-covid-19-vaccinations\/\">currently vaccinated nearly 12 percent<\/a> of the adult population.<br \/>\nHowever, kids <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/02\/05\/pandemic-could-continue-for-seven-years-under-current-vaccination-rate\/\">can still contract and transmit the virus<\/a>, and achieving full herd immunity depends on their vaccination, too.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/12\/02\/moderna-to-test-covid-19-vaccine-on-children\/\">Moderna<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/10\/13\/pfizer-covid-19-vaccine-study-to-include-kids-as-young-as-12\/\">Pfizer<\/a> began testing their vaccines on children as young as 12 at the end of last year.<br \/>\nAt the time, Dr. Anthony Fauci said it <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/11\/29\/fauci-it-will-be-months-before-kids-get-covid-19-vaccine\/\">would still be \u201cmonths\u201d<\/a> before there was enough data from those clinical trials \u2014 as well as information about the vaccine\u2019s \u201cdegree of efficacy and safety\u201d in the adult population \u2014 to begin vaccinating children.<br \/>\nFauci then projected earlier this month that high school students will be able to get vaccinated \u201cby the fall term\u201d while elementary school students might not receive doses until the \u201cfirst quarter of 2022,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FaceTheNation\/status\/1368590959680905219?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1368590959680905219%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.huffpost.com%2Fentry%2Ffauci-high-school-children-vaccines-timeline_n_6044fad4c5b660a0f389513b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CBS reported<\/a>.<br \/>\nModerna\u2019s upcoming combined Phase 2 and Phase 3 trial includes two parts, and each child enrolled will receive two shots 28 days apart, according to the company.<br \/>\nIn the first part of the trial, children will be given different dose levels of the vaccine in order to determine how much to use in the second part of the study.<br \/>\nTwo doses of 50 or 100 micrograms will be administered to children ages 2 to 12, and two shots of 25, 50 or 100 micrograms will be doled out to children under age 2.
