In doing so, the 23-year-old became the nation\u2019s youngest inaugural poet.<br \/>\nShe delivered her poem, \u201cThe Hill We Climb,\u201d in front of an audience assembled on the West front of the U.S. Capitol building to celebrate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newsone.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\"><strong>Joe Biden<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newsone.com\/tag\/kamala-harris\/\"><strong>Kamala Harris<\/strong><\/a>\u2018 historic political achievements. However, by the time she was done, people were still buzzing about what they had just witnessed.<br \/>\n\u201cAs an activist from Los Angeles, her work details issues of race, feminism, oppression, and themes from the African diaspora,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/madamenoire.com\/1210814\/amanda-gorman-inaugural-poet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Madame Noire reported<\/a>.<br \/>\nGorman was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newsone.com\/3757341\/amanda-gorman-first-national-youth-poet-laureate\/\">named the first national youth poet laureate in 2017<\/a>, winning an honor bestowed upon teen poets who demonstrate literary talent and community engagement. The Harvard University graduate focuses on the area where feminism, race, youth and community intersect and is the founder and CEO of <a href=\"http:\/\/onepenonepage.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">One Pen One Page<\/a>, a nonprofit organization that seeks to change the world through student storytellers.<br \/>\n\u201cThe Hill We Climb\u201d touched on a number of topics du jour, including race and national unity, making it especially resonate with those who heard her deliver it. And the norms and notions of what just is isn\u2019t always justice. And yet the dawn is ours before we knew it, somehow we do it. Somehow we\u2019ve weathered and witnessed a nation that isn\u2019t broken, but simply unfinished.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cWe, the successors of a country and a time where a skinny Black girl descended from slaves and raised by a single mother can dream of becoming president only to find herself reciting for one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cAnd yes, we are far from polished, far from pristine, but that doesn\u2019t mean we are striving to form a union that is perfect. We are striving to forge our union with purpose. To compose a country committed to all cultures, colors, characters and conditions of man.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cAnd so we lift our gazes not to what stands between us, but what stands before us. We close the divide, because we know to put our future first, we must first put our differences aside. We lay down our arms so we can reach out our arms to one another. We seek harm to none and harmony for all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cLet the globe, if nothing else, say this is true: that even as we grieved, we grew; that even as we hurt, we hoped; that even as we tired, we tried; that will forever be tied together victorious, not because we will never again know defeat but because we will never again sow division.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-usatoday-native-article_link-entertainment-celebrity-3\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"lazyLoadX\" data-google-query-id=\"CKnQ1O2Vq-4CFQRohgod7VcFsw\">\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cScripture tells us to envision that \u2018everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree and no one shall make them afraid.\u2019 If we\u2019re to look up to our own time, then victory won\u2019t lie in the blade but in all the bridges we\u2019ve\u00a0made.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cThat is the promise to glade, the hill we climb if only we dare it, because being American is more than a pride we inherit\u00a0\u2013\u00a0it\u2019s the past we step into and how we repair it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cWe\u2019ve seen a force\u00a0that would shatter our nation rather than share it, would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy. And\u00a0this effort very nearly succeeded. But while democracy can be periodically delayed, it can never be permanently defeated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cIn this truth, in this faith we trust for while we have for eyes on the future, history has its eyes on us.\u00a0This is the era of just redemption we feared in its inception.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cWe did not feel prepared to be the heirs of such a terrifying hour, but within it we found the power to author a new chapter, to offer hope and laughter to ourselves. So while once we ask \u2018how could we possibly prevail over catastrophe,\u2019 now we assert: \u2018how could catastrophe possibly prevail over us?\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cWe will not march back to what was, but move to what shall be: a country that is bruised but whole, benevolent but bold, fierce and free. We will not be turned around or interrupted by intimidation because we know our enaction and inertia will be the inheritance of the next generation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cOur blenders become their burdens but one thing is certain: If we merge mercy with might, and might with right, then love becomes our legacy in change, our children\u2019s birthright.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cSo let us leave behind a country better than the one we were left. With every breath from my bronze-pounded chest, we will raise this wounded world into a wondrous one. We will rise from the golden\u00a0hills of the west, we will rise from the winds swept north, east where our forefathers first realized revolution. We will rise from the lake-rinsed cities\u00a0of the midwestern states. We will rise from the sun-baked South.
